Toshiba’s Satellite P775 is a good example. The key points I jotted down while putting it through its paces are not the 2GHz Intel Core i7-2630WM quad-core processor – many laptops have one of those – the 750GB hard drive – ditto – or the Blu-ray Disc drive – a less commonplace component, but not one to stir the passions, either – but its backlit-keyboard and its looks. When you think of Italian superbike marques, you think of the colour red – a vigorous, powerful, thrusting hue. Yet Toshiba has chosen to deck its Ducati-themed Satellite U500 out in – dare we say it, slightly feminine – white.
Toshiba and Ducati: marque ‘book pro?
You can understand why. When Acer ponied up for the Ferrari brand, it grabbed the right to release red laptops. And Asus’ Lamborghini licence grants it the exclusive on glossy yellow. Toshiba has been left to come up with an alternative, and it’s chosen white, to signify luxury.
The keyboard surround and wrist rest area, and the laptop‘s lid, have been given an almost leather-like texture to suggest speedboat upholstery. We’ll drift away for a moment to contemplate a bikini-clad honey draped decoratively across its bows… Read the rest of this entry »
Review Pick up the Satellite L450, or even just glance at it, and you’re left in no doubt that it’s very much a budget laptop. Chunky, plasticy and devoid of any bells and whistles, it’s not going to appeal to those who like their laptops to stand out from the crowd.
Toshiba’s Satellite L450: it’s not stylish, but it is dirt cheap
It is, however, dirt cheap, and the L450-137 model we’ve got our hands on here retails for just £379. For this, you get an Intel Celeron T3000, 3GB of DDR 2 memory and integrated Intel GMA 4500M graphics core, along with a 15.6in widescreen display.
Toshiba’s gone for a simple matte-silver finish for the lid, interrupted only by the company’s logo. A large hinge stretches along the bottom of the display, giving the lid a sturdy feel. The display’s bezel isn’t quite as well made, though, and feels very rough when running your finger around the edges of it. Read the rest of this entry »
Review If you like your laptops nice and shiny, Toshiba’s new Satellite A350-12J will go down a treat. Not only do you get a glossy black chassis with a lid that’s surprisingly smudge-resistant, but the keyboard is also coated in the stuff. It’s not something that will appeal to all tastes, and we found it felt very odd to type on.
Toshiba’s Satellite A350-12J
In its favour, though, the keys do have a decent amount of travel and spring back into position nicely. Key placement is also good, with our only complaint being the slimmed-down Enter key, which can be tricky to locate when touch-typing.
We have to admit to liking the illuminated Toshiba logo on the lip of the chassis as well as the light strip along the top of the trackpad – when the novelty wears off it’s possible to turn both of these off, along with the lights on the touch-sensitive controls just above the keyboard.
The trackpad feels good to the touch and matches the 16:9 aspect ratio of the screen, however it doesn’t feature any multi-touch capabilities so iPhone-style zooming is out. Read the rest of this entry »
