Android App of the Week Not an app dedicated to the vicissitudes of India’s currency or an equivalent of Grindr for fans of watersports. No, RunPee is an app designed to tell when the best time is to dash out of a cinema auditorium and take a quick tinkle, without missing too much of the action.

Films by date, name or search with an adjustable timer for late arrivals

The nuts and bolts of the app are as simple as the act of passing water. Choose a film and you are presented with a selection of time slots all long enough for a quick whizz but timed so you won’t really be missing anything by staring at the porcelain rather than the silver screen. Android App of the Week If you’ve ever wondered what your environment looked like in the past, or just like looking at old photographs of places you know, then Historypin is well worth a download.

Searching for pictures couldn’t be more easy. The app shows them pinned to Google Maps so you just pan around to any places of interest. Tap on the pic icon by a pin and the image – or selection of images; you can pin as many as you want to a single location – open up.

A slider lets you change the time period from which photographs are shown to anywhere between 1840 – a year later than the first glass negative was produced – and the present day. Read the rest of this entry »

Android App of the Week Arriving on Android and iOS to coincide with the last mission of the Space Shuttle, NASA’s new official app is a must-have for anyone with even a passing interest in humankind’s efforts to reach for the stars.

Basically a portal for the vast amounts of media the National Aeronautics and Space Administration generates and distributes through its web sites, the app gives you easy access to an absolute shed-load of images, videos and written material.

The menu is simple and clear

The design itself is quite basic with nine icons taking you to NASA’s mission database, Image and Astro picture-of-the-day feeds, videos, Tweets, News, NASA TV, and a Featured section which is currently running a series of interesting articles called “The Year of the Solar System”. Android App of the Week Dinner Spinner is a classic example of the slick and inventive apps that have made the iOS App Store what it is today. It’s also a good example of the way those same apps are now migrating to Android.

The idea is blindingly simple and perfect for anyone who – like me – thinks that cooking involves a telephone and knowing the number of a local pizza delivery service.

Android App of the Week I’ve been using ALK’s CoPilot 8 for Android since I reviewed it in these pages back in 2009. I liked it a lot then and still do. So when ALK announced a major upgrade, my ears pricked up.

CoPilot Live’s nav screen is tidier than before

The first thing you notice about Premium is the redesigned menu system. I’m not sure it’s an improvement because the on-screen buttons are quite a bit smaller and less finger-friendly than before. Thankfully, the navigation screen has been tidied up more successfully. Read the rest of this entry »
